Radiation Cooling Fabric Marks a Breakthrough in Heat Protection

A remarkable leap in smart textiles is unfolding as researchers unveil a new cooling fabric designed to protect wearers from extreme heat. Developed through a collaboration between the University of South Australia and Zhengzhou University, the lightweight material reflects an impressive 96 percent of sunlight, helping the body stay cooler, drier and far more comfortable during harsh outdoor conditions.

Detailed in the journal Nano Research, the new polylactic acid and boron nitride nanosheet composite fabric marks a major advance in radiation cooling technology. Field tests reveal that the fabric can reduce skin temperature by up to 2 degrees Celsius under direct sunlight, and by 3.8 degrees Celsius at night, offering a significant improvement in comfort when compared to bare skin.

Professor Jun Ma from UniSA emphasises that this innovation tackles a growing global challenge. With heat waves becoming more frequent and intense, the need for passive cooling solutions has never been greater. The fabric is designed to regulate heat naturally, relying on its physical structure rather than external energy.

The material works by combining high solar reflectance with strong thermal radiation and superior breathability. Boron nitride nanosheets, known for excellent heat conduction and low weight, are embedded in a biodegradable PLA fibre structure through a scalable electrospinning process. The result is a nanostructured textile that is reportedly five times more breathable than cotton while preventing heat and sweat buildup.

The team believes this smart fabric can support workers in construction, mining and agriculture, as well as athletes and emergency crews exposed to extreme heat. Its sustainable, biodegradable composition aligns with global shifts toward responsible material innovation.

With commercial interest rising, researchers are now exploring pathways for industrial production, promising a future where clothing plays an active role in personal heat management.
