The Nonwovens Innovation and Research Institute has reached a significant milestone, completing twenty years of continuous contribution to the global nonwovens industry. Founded in 2005 as a university spin out, NIRI has evolved into an internationally respected commercial consultancy, supporting more than 450 companies in improving product performance, strengthening sustainability outcomes, reducing costs, and enhancing manufacturing efficiency.
The journey began when Professor Stephen Russell, a leading academic in nonwovens research, joined forces with Chris Fowler, an experienced business leader with a background in medical technology. Their shared vision was to bridge scientific excellence with real world commercial needs. This combination laid the foundation for a business model focused on practical innovation, speed to market, and measurable impact.
Building Expertise and Real World Impact
Over the years, NIRI has assembled a team with more than 400 years of combined nonwovens expertise, spanning scientists, engineers, and technicians. This depth of knowledge has enabled the institute to improve more than 1,000 products across diverse sectors. These include advanced blood plasma filters, discreet hygiene solutions, protective materials for defense, virus filtering masks, durable mosquito nets, and plastic free alternatives. Each solution balances technical performance with commercial viability.
Investment Driven Growth
A strong focus on facilities and equipment has supported rapid innovation. Expansion beyond university premises in 2017 and the opening of Innovation House in 2023 marked key milestones. The latest investment significantly expanded laboratory capacity and strengthened research and development capabilities.
Shaping the Next Chapter
Looking ahead, NIRI is investing in biopolymer processing, high performance alternatives to PFAS, and advanced polymerisation facilities. The launch of the Technology and Innovation Hub further supports start ups by offering access to facilities, expertise, and commercial guidance.
As the industry faces sustainability demands, regulatory change, and circular economy transitions, NIRI remains committed to its founding ethos. Cost effective innovation, efficiency improvement, and real impact continue to define its role as a trusted partner in nonwovens development.
