Up's Handicraft Industry Eyes Rs 35 Crore Windfall At Maha Kumbh

The ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj is proving to be a transformative event for Uttar Pradesh’s handicraft industry, with officials projecting an impressive Rs 35 crore in trade during the 45-day spiritual gathering. This marks a dramatic surge from the Rs 4.3 crore recorded during the previous Kumbh in 2019, underlining the growing allure of the state’s traditional crafts.

A major highlight of the event is the expansive ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) exhibition, spread across 6,000 square meters. Visitors, after their holy dip at the Sangam, are drawn to this vibrant showcase of the region’s unique craftsmanship. From the intricate zari-zardozi work and Varanasi’s wooden toys to Firozabad’s colorful glass toys and Kushinagar’s carpets, the exhibition is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Uttar Pradesh.

Sharad Tandon, Joint Commissioner of Industries in Prayagraj, expressed optimism about the event's impact. “This year’s Maha Kumbh is driving significant growth in sales, which not only boosts the state’s economy but also creates new job opportunities and uplifts local artisans,” he remarked.

Adding a modern twist, e-commerce giant Flipkart has partnered with the fair, offering artisans a stall to sell their products online at no additional cost. This initiative bridges the gap between traditional crafts and digital markets, providing artisans with a global platform to showcase their work.

The ODOP initiative has also brought 75 geographical indication (GI) products into the spotlight, including Banarasi sarees, Pratapgarh’s amla, Gorakhpur’s terracotta, and Mirzapur’s brass utensils. With 34 GI products originating from the Kashi region alone, the exhibition celebrates these unique creations, preserving their legacy while offering them global recognition.

The Maha Kumbh is no longer just a spiritual celebration—it has evolved into a thriving economic platform, empowering artisans and elevating Uttar Pradesh’s handicraft industry to new heights.
