Meghalaya Shines on National Textile Map as Giriraj Singh Unveils EKTA Meghalaya and ITTC

Meghalaya marked a historic moment in its textile journey as Union Minister of Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh inaugurated EKTA Meghalaya along with the Integrated Textile Tourism Centre (ITTC) at Nongpoh. The event brought together national and state leaders including Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs Shri Pabitra Margherita, State Minister Shri Metbah Lyngdoh, Central Silk Board Member Secretary Shri P. Sivakumar, and senior officials, signalling a powerful push for textile development across the North East.

Designed as a landmark cultural and skill development destination, the ITTC stands as a first of its kind initiative by the Meghalaya Department of Textiles in partnership with the Ministry of Textiles. The centre blends tradition with modern opportunity, offering visitors an immersive experience of the states rich textile heritage, especially its globally admired Eri silk. Alongside cultural showcases, it also aims to drive capacity building, market linkages, and artisan entrepreneurship under one integrated ecosystem.

EKTA Meghalaya added further momentum with vibrant displays from the Central Silk Board and state textile departments, covering silk, handloom, handicrafts, jute, and technical textiles. The platform encouraged collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing across sectors, strengthening pathways for growth and inter-state partnerships.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Giriraj Singh highlighted the immense potential of the North East as a textile powerhouse and emphasised the need for greater value addition in Eri and Muga silk to boost rural livelihoods. Shri Pabitra Margherita placed strong focus on artisan empowerment, digital adoption, and youth-led enterprises, applauding Meghalaya for its leadership in natural silk.

Reaffirming the Central Silk Boards commitment, Shri P. Sivakumar outlined ongoing efforts to reinforce the sericulture value chain and enhance scientific production of Eri and Muga silk. Together, these initiatives set Meghalaya on a transformative path, positioning it as a vibrant textile and cultural destination with national and global promise.
